Strategically located, Mount Canate with its 800+ meters is the first serious bulwark of the Apennines
upstream of Salsomaggiore from which the soft pre-Apennine heights separate it. It is well distinguished
by the presence on its summit of a series of telecommunications antennas, and it is this very feature
that makes it perfectly visible from all over the plain and the surrounding heights. It is about 800
meters high and is therefore a mountain in its own right. From its summit start several paths and cart
tracks that with varying difficulty descend to the valley floor of the Stirone stream.
At the foothills of Mount Kanate rises the black silhouette of the Pietra Nera ophiolite.
